Bloat is occurring more commonly in German Breeds, Great Danes, St. Bernards, Sheepdogs, Airdales, Terriers and Setters.
What causes bloat? A deficiency in the connective tissue leads to slackening of the suspension of internal organs, in this case the stomach, which under appropriate conditions may ‘turn’ as increased quantities of gas are formed.
Symptoms - The profile of this complaint involves sudden and pronounced corporal bloatation. Congestion in the blood vessels leads to circulatory weakness which in turn produces a marked fall in blood pressure. Because of this the dog will be prostrate despite marked restlessness. He will try to vomit the contents of the stomach by retching which the turning will, of course, have made impossible. Here a rapid operation is ESSENTIAL (This is an emergency)
