Garlic (herb info)

Information Essay

When used in small amounts garlic is quite an amazing herb. It is

  • antibacterial,
  • stimulates the immune system,
  • anticancer,
  • nutritive,
  • antioxidant,
  • expectorant,
  • lowers blood pressure,
  • anti tumor,
  • anti viral,
  • anti fungal and an excellent 'tonic' herb.

The strongest affinities are the liver, blood, immune system and cardiovascular system.

There have been numerous studies about allicin - a volatile oil constituent in garlic. Garlic has a complex chemistry and contains at least 30 known compounds beside allicin, that are useful in conditions ranging from skin disorders to cancer.

Garlic's effectiveness as a systemic flea repellent is the subject of great debate. Claims vary from excellent results to useless. My opinion is that garlic may not actually work directly against the fleas but rather it promotes excellent general health and fleas do not bother with dogs having excellent health. If a dog's immune system is compromised and has poor general health, the use of garlic will probably do nothing to prevent fleas.

When misused (used excessively or over an extended period) garlic MAY cause Heinz-body anemia, a potentially life-threatening blood disease. Two chemical are responsible - s-methyl cysteine sulfoxide and n-propyldisuldhide. These chemicals chemicals deplete an enzyme that protects the red blood cells. The urine becomes dark and the animal becomes anemic.

Do not give garlic to dogs that are anemic or puppies under 10 weeks of age.

Small doses of garlic added to your dogs food 3 or 4 times per week (1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder per pound of food fed) will greatly benefit the overall health. Just don't overdo it.

Cats are more sensitive to the side effects of garlic than dogs are. Watch of digestive upsets or behavioral changes - if your cat does not like garlic - don't give it.

Our recommended product contain proper amounts of garlic - Herbal Multivitamin

We always recommend you not look to a single herb to heal your pet - always think HOLISTICALLY - look at the big picture and use diet, herbs and homeopathy to bring the whole body back into balance.
